Historically, Myanmar, like many parts of the world was fought over by European and Asian powers, until it was colonized by Britain in 1885 after the 2nd Anglo-Burmese War. It would not get its definitive independence until 1948. Fundamentally Buddhist, 89% of the population profess this religion. It is said that here, people enjoy the pleasure of gratifying the visitor. Burma has been ruled by a military dictatorship since 1964. In 2011, the military junta was officially dissolved following a 2010 general election, and a nominally civilian government was installed.
