It was declared a world Heritage\u00a0site by Unesco in 1988. It is known as \u201cLittle England\u201d, and\u00a0was the favourite mountain station of the British during the period\u00a0of colonization. It is located about 1900 meters above sea level. The place is truly wild and is bathed\u00a0by the Indian Ocean, surrounded by jungle lagoons and rocky areas. Galle was occupied by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century,\u00a0by the Dutch in the seventeenth century, and finally by the British in\u00a0the nineteenth century. All these cultures have left their marks on this\u00a0city. We recommend biking or walking around the area of the Dutch\u00a0fort, around its streets and its shops&#8230; within the walled area. It is a vibrant city with a mixture of<br \/>\nmodern architecture, colonial buildings and ruins. Due to its large harbour\u00a0and its strategic position along the East-Western sea trade routes, Colombo\u00a0was well known to traders 2,000 years ago. Our suggestion is to go around the\u00a0city by a tuk tuk to see its markets and narrow streets. Note that the most\u00a0important International airport is close to the fishing village of Negombo,\u00a0about an hour from the center of Colombo.
