It would not get its definitive independence until 1948. Fundamentally Buddhist, 89% of the population profess this religion. It is said that here, people enjoy the pleasure of gratifying the visitor. Burma has been ruled by a military dictatorship since 1964. In 2011, the military junta was officially dissolved following a 2010 general election, and a nominally civilian government was installed. Naypyidaw became the capital in 2005.
